Gender inequality in the workplace has persisted for far too lon g. There is no shortage of research that shows female participation in the workforce is beneficial to the economy and in shaping the minds of our fu ture generation. The gaps in labour force participation between men and wo men remain large. This uneven playing field comes at a significant economi c cost\, hampers productivity\, and weighs on growth. The implications las t far longer than most can see – including implications on retirement in adequacy of women and the role modelling for future generations of our wom en\, and men. IMF research has found that men and women complement each ot her in the production process\, creating an additional benefit from increa sing women’s employment on growth. Shockingly\, the IMF finds that closi ng the gender gap could increase GDP by an average of 35%! Whilst four-fif ths of these gains could come from adding workers to the workforce\, but f ully one-fifth of the gains are due to the gender diversity effect on prod uctivity. In Singapore\, women are fortunate to have access to good health care\, education\, support networks and pro-family policies. Still\, gende r inequality in corporate ranks is persistent and rife. Why is this so? Is it our educational curriculum or policies? Or the silo expectations of wo men in society & work? Or the lack of family-friendly policies or the uneq ual economic incentives for women at the workplace? To address this questi on\, and to examine the fundamental reasons and potential solutions to lev el the gender imbalance\, we have invited a team of esteemed panellists to share their views on this topic.
